We are surrounded by toxins everyday! It is impossible to avoid all toxins but by making a few simple switches we can drastically reduce our exposure.
Switching to a non-toxic lifestyle can seem a little overwhelming and you may not know where to start. That is why we are sharing this blog post! Today we will be talking all about your environment.
Environmental toxins can be found inside and outside the home. Inside they can be found in the form of household cleaners, laundry detergents, fabric softener, deodorizing sprays, as well as scented candles and waxes. Outside the home they can be found in the form of pollution from manufacturing plants, exhaust from vehicles, second hand cigarette smoke, and electromagnetic frequencies (EMF's) to name a few.
One way we can begin to move towards a toxin-free lifestyle is to start with things within your control. Things that are within your home. We started with our household cleaners, laundry detergent, and fabric softeners. It is best to buy natural products, make sure you read the ingredients label first. Check out this website, Environmental Working Group, you can search your product there and it will give you a rating and a breakdown of the ingredients. Or you can simply make your own, there are many recipes online.
Here is the recipe we us for an All-Purpose Cleaner:
1/2 to 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water
10-15 drops of essential oil (tea tree oil is a great option because it is an antibacterial) combine all ingredients in a spray bottle
Once you have eliminated as many toxins from inside the home as possible, it's time to move onto outside environmental toxins. Now many of these, unfortunately, are out of our control. However, EMF is one that we can do our best to reduce.
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation. EMFs come from all sorts of things, including your microwave, cell phone, cordless telephones, smart meters, TV, radios, computers, power lines, fitness tracking devices, routers, and, of course, ultraviolet waves, x-rays, and gamma rays. We are practically surrounded by EMFs at all times.
Here are a few tips to help you reduce your EMF exposure:
Keep your cell phone as far away from you as possible at all times, and when you are talking on it use speakerphone. Research has shown a direct link between brain cancer and cell phone use.
Keep the bedroom clear of as many EMFs as possible. Reduce your use of bluetooth devices.
Try to keep your cell phone at least 6 feet away from you when possible, and if you use it as your alarm clock at night switch it to airplane mode. If you can leave it out of your room at night that is even better.
Use EMF protectors, you can buy EMF blocking cases all the way to EMF blocking hats, that one might sound a little extreme but hey we thought we would share the option.
Get out in nature, getting out away from as much EMF as possible is on of the best ways to reduce your exposure, and this is certainly one of our favourite ways
Earthing, stick your toes in the grass (or buy an earthing mat) nature counteracts the effects of EMFs on your body.
It is impossible to completely eliminate this form of toxin from your life so the real goal here is to reduce them as much as you can.
